NEWBROOK WOMEN'S AUXILIARY 235 Grassy Brook Rd. Brookline, VT 05345 President: Debra Pierson Vice President: Barb Bristol Secretary: Debra Record Treasurer: Sigrid Blazej
The Newbrook Ladies Auxiliary started July 24,1950 with very few members. As the men built the firehouse which is south of the village, they asked the ladies to help raise money for the heating system for the firehouse and to have a kitchen also. A small group of ladies held a meeting to decide what to do to raise money for the fire department. The had bake sales, plant sales, the hunters supper and dance and card parties which made a large profit for the fire department. They were able to buy helmets, raincoats and put together a nice kitchen for them to work in. When the fire department was called out on cold and windy nights and they knew it would be a long night, the ladies would make coffee, soup and sandwiches. That's when the canteen started with all volunteer members. As more people moved to Newfane and Brookline the fire department grew and so did the ladies auxiliary. Being a nonprofit organization the Auxiliary decided to have more sales and found other ways to raise money for the fire department, so they could buy more equipment to work with at the fires. With more people in the department and Auxiliary they decided to have a two day fair. The men built the ladies a food booth, which they ran, and the men built booths for the games. They also had a horse show and horse pulls. It was a fun day for everyone and the department made a large profit. They decided to have this be an annual event, which ran for several years In 1962 the department and auxiliary also decided to run a bingo night the firehouse. The fire department would run the bingo games while the ladies sold food. This too made a large profit for the department, so they decided to continue to have bingo every Saturday night, which is still being held at the firehouse. At present bingo is the biggest fund raiser we have. As years have gone by the auxiliary continued to have fund raisers, which are bake sales, plant sales, a Thanksgiving basket raffle, hunters breakfast and have been asked to make and serve refreshments for birthday parties and funeral receptions. Every month the auxiliary is busy with some kind of fundraiser. We have a great time at whatever we do and the fire department is very pleased with our donations. We have many members now and we welcome anyone who would like to join. If you are interested in joining you can contact either Deb Pierson at (802) 365-4302 or Deb Record at (802) 365-4454.
